Non-NHS services

The NHS does not pay for some of the services we provide.  These include private sick notes, insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, passport signing and some vaccination services.  Our fees for these services, which are in line with BMA approved national guidance, are displayed in the Surgery.  For further details please ask Reception for a fees and charges leaflet.

Capacity Assessment for legal matters

Whilst GPs can act as a certificate provider for Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), this is a private chargeable service not covered by the NHS and is therefore up to each GP practice to decide whether or not they provide it as a private service.

Assessing capacity with regards to making a decision at the time in relation medical treatment or i.e. hospital admission, is within the remit of a GP and something that they routinely do in their day-to-day practice.

Testamentary capacity is a different legal issue from consent to medical treatment and is outside the scope of general practitioners.

It is not a medical responsibility, and we are not insured or resourced to do this non-NHS work, and therefore as a practice this is not something that we undertake.

Most high street solicitors will be able to carry out the assessment for the purpose of obtaining an LPA and be the certificate provider.

lf they feel unable to do so they should refer for a formal assessment by a psychogeriatrician.

How long will it take?

We aim to complete all types of medical form with 28 working days depending on the complexity of the form.

Please do not expect your GP to process forms overnight. Urgent requests may mean that a doctor has to make special arrangements to process the form quickly, this may come at an additional cost.  Time spent completing forms and preparing reports takes the GP away from the medical care of his or her patients. Most GPs have a very heavy workload and paperwork takes up an increasing amount of their time.  In addition non-NHS work must be undertaken outside of NHS contracted time.

Why do we need to charge?

Non-NHS work takes our staff away form their normal NHS roles and adds extra hours to their day. Please remember that there are many steps and staff members involved in the process from your request for work to be done to the completed work returning to you.  The time taken to do these tasks is often underestimated.
